This particular scarf was the inspiration to not only create and launch EPOC, but also the specific design of the first edition EPOC scarves, the Eleni Scarf. Our hope is that these scarves will provide chemotherapy patients the same sense of comfort and inspiration that Eleni received from her favorite purple scarf.
Why the Color Purple? Purple is the color of courage and bravery. It is a bold hue that is often associated with royalty. It was also the favorite color of our founder, Dr. Eleni Vavas. Additionally, it is the official color of the cardiology department at Northshore University Hospital in Manhasset, Long Island, where Dr. Vavas served as Director of Echocardiography. Eleni was often seen wearing her dark purple hospital scrubs and long white doctor coat as she worked to serve her community.
Eleni’s Favorite Scarf: Eleni had one scarf in particular that she was drawn to the most. It was solid purple with an intricate weave pattern in the fabric (picture can be seen at the top of the home page). She wore this scarf the most and it provided her a tremendous amount of comfort and support during her chemotherapy treatment. It was in a way her armor during her fight against this disease. The color along with the luxuriously soft hand-feel of the scarf gave her the extra energy she needed during her battle!
